“The circle is a way of creating a sacred space, a place of safety in times of trouble, where the ordinary becomes extraordinary.”
Margot Adler, Drawing Down the Moon
Circles of women are as old as time and as important as the breath we draw into our bodies. Magic, spirit, and universal energies grow more powerful when we lean into sisterhood and create intentional communities.
I’m not yet sure what this will be, this community I feel called to create. I only know the pull of the calling in my bones and in my dreams, telling me over and over, an insistent whisper or the resonant heartbeat of a bass drum: gather the coven, gather the coven.
This year, I’ve had the privilege of bringing together an incredible coven of women in Austin. We’ve met for ritual and reflection; we’ve shared laughter and tears. This practice has nourished my soul and reinforced my calling, reminding me of how much we need this. I’ve also connected and reconnected with witches all over North America, having moving and meaningful conversations about how we can meet this moment.
This is what I’ll be thinking about in the months ahead: How can I support the growth of this community? How can I support others to create their own covens? For now, if you’re feeling the call upon reading these words, I invite you to start thinking about your coven— the women in your life who help you feel supported and seen. What would the simplest version of coming together look and feel like? How might you work together to begin building a supportive container?
More to come.
